In Canada, August is National Wellness Month—an initiative that encourages people across the country to prioritize their health and well-being. Wellness can include daily habits like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and getting proper sleep. But it also extends to nurturing your emotional and mental health—by spending time in nature, learning how to say “no,” and creating space for quiet reflection.
Here are five simple but powerful ways to support your wellness this month:
1. Exercise Daily: If you have children, it may take a little extra juggling, but the best way to take care of them is to take care of yourself first. That includes making time to move your body every day. Try waking up before your kids to get in some exercise and start the day with energy. Movement releases feel-good chemicals that boost your mood and motivation. We encourage clients to find a consistent time and routine that works—and stick to it. End-of-day workouts may be harder to follow through on when you’re tired, or when unexpected commitments pop up. Morning routines often lead to better consistency.
2. Eat a Balanced Diet: Healthy food provides energy, nutrients, vitamins, good bone health, and helps you feel overall good about yourself. Not many people will raise their hand saying that they eat the whole bag of chips makes them feel well. Eat in moderation, have treats but eat them sparingly.
If you’re unsure where to start, consider speaking with your doctor. They can connect you with a registered dietitian or nutritionist to help build a plan that fits your needs.
3. Prioritize Sleep: Another must, 4 hours does not cut it. Adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night for their bodies to rejuvenate, repair, and give them energy.
If you struggle with falling or staying asleep, try a few of these calming bedtime habits:
-
-
- Turn down the lights an hour before bed
- Shut off screens (phones, tablets, TV)
- Read a physical book
- Sip herbal tea
- Take a warm bath
-
4. Do Something You Love: Make time for hobbies that bring you joy. Whether it’s golfing, reading, swimming, hiking, or just spending time at the beach, doing something you love nurtures your happiness.
5. Try Meditation or Stillness: There are many ways to meditate, and it doesn’t have to be complicated. At its core, meditation is about slowing down, quieting the mind, and allowing peace to enter the body.
If you’re new to it, start simple:
-
-
- Lie on a mat or sit comfortably
-
- Close your eyes and focus on your breath
-
- Breathe deeply and slowly
-
- Add calming music or nature sounds if you like
-
Just a few minutes of stillness can help reset your nervous system and bring clarity to your day.
