I met up with some acquaintances that I hadn’t seen in a couple of years. I found out that one of the couples was going to do their first triathlons the next day. I was impressed as I never thought of them as the tri types and it was certainly not something that I had ever considered doing.
So it got me to thinking: while you’re on holidays and away from your regular workout routine, could you create your own “holiday triathlon” to keep you on track with your fitness? You don’t have to work to the extent of a real tri but using the concept of 3 different exercises to work muscles differently and avoid boredom.
Option 1 – Traditional Tri
So the traditional triathlon events are swimming, biking and running. If you’re camping or at a cottage by a lake, this is a breeze. Swimming in the lake every day, riding your bike with your kids and going for a run or walk will keep you active and your fitness on track.
Option 2 – Hotel Tri
If you’re staying in a hotel on your vacation, you may have access to a fitness room. Most fitness rooms are not as well stocked with different cardio machines as a regular gym, but most will have a treadmill, an elliptical and a bike. So if you have 30 minutes for your workout, do 10 mins on each machine. Bonus: if you can find a gym with a rowing machine, you can add a great upper body and core workout to your cardio.
Option 3 – Water Tri
If you’re near water, but swimming isn’t your thing, how about trying kayaking or canoeing, paddle boarding and wake boarding. These are great activities to work your core and your upper body.
Remember the plan is to keep your fitness on track and have fun during your holidays. If you not having fun, “tri” something else!
