National Health and Fitness Day is coming up on Saturday, June 7, 2025. This annual event was created to encourage Canadians to get moving and raise awareness about the many benefits of physical activity. The National Health and Fitness Day Act, passed in 2014, reflects a nationwide commitment to improving our collective health through exercise and movement.
Many communities across the country will host events to celebrate the day. Be sure to check your local municipality, gyms, and fitness centres for special programming. For example, cities in the Lower Mainland will be offering free 60-minute spin classes and stretch sessions to help people get moving.
Tips for Individuals to Get Involved
- Visit your local community centre:
Check out your community centre’s schedule for special events or drop-in activities. Many centres offer free or low-cost group classes like yoga, Zumba, aqua fit, or recreational sports on this day. It’s a great way to try something new in a supportive environment. - Get active with family and friends:
Plan a group outing like a bike ride, swim, or hike. Choose a local trail, community pool, or outdoor space where you can all be active together. To make it more meaningful, consider turning it into a small fundraiser—collect donations and support a cause like a local youth sports team or Jumpstart by Canadian Tire, which helps kids access sport and play. - Choose active transportation:
Commit to leaving the car at home on June 7th. Walk, cycle, scooter, or take public transit wherever you need to go. Not only is this better for your health, but it also reduces your carbon footprint. If you have kids, make it fun by turning the commute into a mini-adventure. - Try an online fitness class with ParticipACTION
ParticipACTION will be offering a variety of online workout videos you can follow at home. Whether you’re into high-energy cardio or gentle stretching, there’s something for everyone, perfect for those who prefer to stay indoors or have limited access to fitness facilities.
Why It Matters
Staying active is one of the simplest ways to boost your physical and mental well-being. It supports heart health, reduces stress, improves mood, and can bring people together. National Health and Fitness Day is a great reminder that movement doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming, just 30 minutes a day can make a big difference.
So on June 7th, join your community, your province, and your country in getting active. Whether you’re walking, dancing, lifting, or stretching—just move.
Your body will thank you!
