National Fitness Centre Week is August 3rd–9th in Canada. It’s a time to promote the benefits of fitness and wellness centres and how they can support your health goals.
If you’re thinking about joining a gym but don’t know where to start, read on for helpful tips. Whether you’re seeking guidance on how to work out, looking for motivation, or hoping to find a sense of community, fitness centres can offer structure, support, and connection.
And if cost is a barrier, don’t hesitate to speak with a manager, many facilities offer promotions or financial support options.
Here’s how to find the right facility for you:
1. Decide where you want to go: I suggest setting up a meeting to tour the facility and get all your questions answered. Determine the costs. Some gyms also allow you to use only classes or just the gym portion or everything together. Sign up for what you will use.
2. Book a Fitness Assessment: Whenever a new member joins the gym, we suggest they get a fitness assessment. This allows the Fitness Consultant and member to talk about goals, where they are at in their fitness, etc.
3. Ask for a Free Trial: Ask for free passes or a one-day trial. Don’t be afraid to ask for a free trial day, some class passes. Many gyms may not advertise these, but they are available if you ask.
4. Get Reviews and Recommendations: Read online reviews, talk to friends, or ask around in your community. Choose a gym that fits your goals and where you’ll feel safe, supported, and comfortable.
5. Ask All the Questions: Here are a few important questions to ask before you commit:
- Is this a franchise? (Some allow you to use other locations while travelling.)
- What are the hours of operation?
- What’s included in the membership?
- Are there programs or lessons for children or adults, and are there discounts?
- Can I try it out for a week or a month before signing a long-term contract?
You want to get a feel for the gym’s vibe and community, and be confident it aligns with your needs.
6. Check Staff Credentials: When you visit, talk to the staff. Ask about their certifications, training, and experience. Choosing a gym where staff are qualified and knowledgeable helps ensure you’re in safe hands.
Fitness and wellness centres can be a powerful tool to support your health journey. The right facility will motivate, educate, and encourage you, while helping you build healthy habits that last.
Take your time, do your research, and find the space that feels right for you!
