‘No Sick’ November

Posted on October 24, 2025
by Curtis Health

‘Tis the season for sniffles and sneezes! While it’s important to maintain your fitness routine, this time of year also calls for extra care to keep colds and flus at bay.

Staying healthy in a shared workout space means practicing good hygiene, being mindful of others, and supporting your immune system. Take responsibility for both your own well-being and the health of those around you by keeping equipment clean, washing your hands often, and avoiding the fitness center if you’re unwell. Don’t forget that nutrition plays a big role, too — limit refined sugars and processed foods, and load up on immune-boosting options like ginger, garlic, leafy greens, and nourishing broths.

Hygiene and sanitation

  • Wipe down equipment. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Wipe down machines, free weights, mats, and other equipment before and after each use.
  • Wash and sanitize your hands. Clean your hands with soap and water before and after your workout. Use hand sanitizer frequently throughout your session, especially if you move between different machines or stations.
  • Bring your own supplies. Use your own clean workout towel to wipe away sweat and place it between yourself and equipment benches. For mat-based exercises, bring your own mat instead of using a shared one.
  • Avoid touching your face. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent the transfer of germs from surfaces to your body.
  • Cover cuts and wounds. Use a secure bandage to cover any open cuts or scrapes on your skin. This prevents germs from entering your body and protects other gym-goers from potential infection.
  • Be careful in locker rooms. Always wear sandals or flip-flops in gym showers and other wet areas to prevent fungal infections like athlete’s foot and ringworm.
  • Don’t share personal items. Avoid sharing towels, water bottles, and other gear with others.
  • Shower after your workout. Take a shower as soon as possible after exercising to wash away any lingering germs and bacteria on your skin.
  • Clean your gear. Wash your workout clothes after every use and regularly clean and sanitize your gym bag and reusable water bottle
