Not much rain in sight these days, what is heat stress? Heat stress is when your body’s cooling system can’t keep up with the heat, you end up dehydrated, and your temperature rises above 38 degrees Celsius. This is when heat-related illnesses can happen such as heat stroke, heat rash, and heat exhaustion.
How can we avoid heat stress? It is best to wear loose-fitting clothing that allows the sweat to evaporate. Lighter-coloured clothing absorbs less heat from the sun. Avoid colours like black and dark blue. Sip on water all day. It is best not to wait until you are very thirsty, at that point you are probably close to dehydration. Eat cooling foods, (foods that are water-filled), cucumbers, celery, and watermelon. Avoid the sun at peak times. On a sweltering day, you will want to be out in the morning or late evening, find shade, and being by water can provide some reprieve. If you do not have air conditioning, use fans, use the basement if you have one as it will be a cooler temperature than the upstairs. If your home is too hot, you should seek cooler air at a library, community centre, or mall.
Please ensure you not only do this for yourself, but also your children and pets.
