How to Simplify and Live Minimally

Posted on September 11, 2024

If only we could all spend a little less, and recycle and reuse a bit more. It surely would make our world a bit better. This month I will help you find ways to live more sustainably and simplify your lives. I challenge you to find three ways from my list to live more minimally this fall.

simplify life

  • Only use reusable bags – no plastic – this one is probably one of the easier ones. Pack reusable bags into your vehicle so that you have them every time you go shopping. Say no to even the extra bags, the ones that cost $1 or the brown bags.
  • Plant some herbs – I know we can’t all have a garden, but a way to save from buying herbs is to go to your local plant store, buy a few and plant them in some pretty pots either indoors or outdoors. Here in BC, you would be surprised as to what can last all year long. This will also allow you to not keep buying from the store, it adds up in cost, and you probably waste more than you realize.
  • Make your own meals – you will not only save but will reduce waste too.
  • Buy items with less recycled packaging – items in paper, glass, or no plastic are far better off than single plastic.
  • Buy in bulk – items like spices, grains, oats, rice, etc can be bought in larger quantities. You can bring your own jars to some stores and bulk food places so you can fill up your own containers.
  • Compost – another easy one, compost all your scraps and either have them picked up or make your own compost pile on your property that you can use for your gardens. Depending on where you live this may be an attractant to wildlife. You can still compost and have it picked up.
  • Closet cleanout – take out everything you own and organize on what needs to be donated, recycled, and what you wear regularly. Next, set a goal to not buy anything new for 6 months. If you need a specific item, see if you can find it at a thrift store or borrow it from a friend.

I hope you will be able to find a few ideas to get you started on living life more minimally. I believe you find enjoyment when you are not suffocated by things and clutter.
